Becoming Her: The Woman Who Shows Up for Everyone Else: A Story About Being Seen

Sometimes the people who love us notice we've stopped showing up for ourselves before we even realize it.

There's something special about the moments when someone sees us a little more clearly than we've been seeing ourselves.

Not just the version of us that gets everything done. Not just the mom, the partner, the career woman, or the person everyone can count on.

But the woman underneath all those roles.

The woman who gets tired, too.

The woman who deserves to feel special without having to earn it.

The woman who spends so much time making sure everyone else is okay that she sometimes forgets to ask herself the same question.

Recently, I had a woman in my studio whose story reminded me why I love what I do so much.

She's a flight attendant, a mom, and a soon-to-be wife. Her life is full of responsibilities, different roles, and people who count on her.

And somewhere in the middle of showing up for everyone else, her husband noticed something.

She wasn't showing up for herself the way she deserved to.

So he decided to do something about it.

A gift that meant more than a photoshoot

He nominated her for a blog feature and arranged for her to have a boudoir experience in my studio.

He signed her up on Mother's Day and waited until Father's Day to tell her.

I love that detail. There's something so thoughtful about the planning behind it, about recognizing that the woman who does so much for others deserves to have something special planned for her, too.

He wasn't simply giving her photographs.

He was giving her an opportunity to pause.

A reason to take a day for herself.

An experience that was about her, and a chance to celebrate a woman he clearly wanted to see celebrated.

And then there's the part of this story that made me smile.

Even though this was an opportunity for her to show up for herself, she was still thinking about him.

She was creating these images for her husband.

And honestly, I think that's such a sweet reminder that doing something for ourselves and doing something for the people we love don't always have to be separate things.

We can enjoy an experience for ourselves while also wanting to share a little piece of it with someone who means the world to us.

Both things can be true.

The women behind the roles

I think a lot of women understand what it feels like to become so accustomed to taking care of everyone else that taking care of themselves starts to feel optional.

There's always another shift to work, another responsibility to handle, another person who needs something.

And when you wear so many hats, it's easy to forget that underneath all those roles, you're still a person with your own needs, dreams, insecurities, and desires.

You can love being a mom and still need time to yourself.

You can love your career and still feel exhausted.

You can love your partner and still deserve experiences that are just for you.

You don't have to wait until you're burned out to deserve a little care.

You don't have to reach a certain milestone, change your body, or become a different version of yourself before you're allowed to feel beautiful.

And you certainly don't need someone else's permission to take up space in your own life.

Sometimes, though, having someone who loves you remind you of those things can mean more than they realize.

Why stories like hers matter to me

As a photographer, I get to meet women in so many different seasons of life.

Some are celebrating milestones. Some are stepping outside their comfort zones. Some want to surprise their partners. Others simply want to do something they've been thinking about for years.

There isn't one right reason to book a boudoir session.

And I don't believe every woman who walks through my studio door needs to leave with a completely transformed sense of confidence.

Sometimes, it's enough to give yourself permission to try something new.

To be taken care of for a day.

To do something outside your usual routine.

To see yourself in a different light.

And sometimes, it's simply about creating something beautiful with someone you love in mind.

What I hope every woman knows is that she doesn't have to wait for someone else to nominate her, surprise her, or arrange the perfect occasion.

You can choose yourself, too.

You can give yourself the experience you've been dreaming about.

You can decide that celebrating who you are right now is reason enough.

And if someone who loves you sees that you need a reminder? Well, that's a pretty beautiful thing, too.

A little reminder for the woman reading this

Maybe you're the mom who keeps everything moving.

Maybe you're the woman working long hours, traveling, building a career, or preparing for a new chapter in your life.

Maybe you're the friend everyone calls when things go wrong.

Or maybe you're simply in a season where you've been giving so much of yourself that you've forgotten what it feels like to do something just because you want to.

Here's your reminder:

You are allowed to be the person who receives the love, the attention, and the care, too.

You don't have to do everything for everyone before you're allowed to do something for yourself.

And you don't have to wait for a special occasion to celebrate the woman you already are.

To the husband who wanted to give his wife this experience, thank you for the reminder that sometimes love looks like noticing.

And to every woman reading this, I hope you remember that you deserve to be seen, too.

With love,
